The Split view simplifies moving or copying items between cabinets, drawers and folders. Clicking the Split button opens a second view on the bottom. This lets you move or copy items between two separate locations, usually top-to-bottom.
This is how moving/copying usually works:
Note that moving items between different levels in a cabinet can change them from drawers to folders or vice versa. These changes are noted both in the explanations and in the Change Chart below.
Using the top view, select the item(s) that you are going to copy/move. It can be a drawer, folder or file(s). You can also switch the top view into Explorer view to select an item outside of a cabinet.
Select a new location for the item in the lower view. Think of the new location as the container that you’ll move/copy the item into. Valid locations are a cabinet, drawer, or folder. You can also switch the lower view into Explorer view to select a location outside of a cabinet.
If the target is a cabinet, make sure that no drawers or folders are selected. Click on the cabinet’s tab a second time to close any open drawers/folders. You will want to select a cabinet as the target if you are copying/moving a drawer into the cabinet.
NOTE: If you move/copy a folder into a cabinet, the folder will become a drawer. You cannot move/copy a file to a cabinet. See the Change Chart below.
If the target destination is a drawer, select it in the lower view. If the drawer is already open, re-select it to make sure that no folders in the drawer are selected.
NOTE: If you move/copy a drawer into another drawer, it will become a folder. See the Change Chart below.
If the target destination is a folder, select it in the lower view.
NOTE: If you move/copy a drawer into a folder, it will become a subfolder. The same is true if you move/copy a folder into a folder. See the Change Chart below.
Use the Copy or Move button to perform the action:
You will first get a confirmation dialog box. Double-check your source and target locations. If you are only moving or copying a single item, you have the option of renaming it on-the-fly as part of the operation. If you are copying a file, you also have the option of creating a shortcut to the original file instead of creating a copy. Shortcuts will let you maintain a single file, but open it from many different locations.
NOTE: If you have disallowed deletions in the source cabinet, the Move button will not be available. To circumvent this restriction, switch the source view into Explorer View. For more information on disallowing deletions, see Disallowing Deletions.
Instead of using the Move and Copy buttons, you can drag/drop items either direction:
When using drag/drop, there’s a powerful Drop Name feature that can rename files automatically when they’re dropped. See Drop Renaming for more information.
You can also use Windows’ cut/copy & paste functionality:
For advanced users, you can change either the Source or Target view (or both) to Explorer view. This will give you access to external folders and files.
You can resize the Source and Target areas by dragging the divider between the two areas.
