Texting with Trillian

While Trillian supports instant messaging for multiple clients, it also supports text messaging from an AOL IM account. This feature allows AIM users to send text messages to a person’s mobile number and does not require the recipient to have an AOL IM or Trillian screenname. Any messages sent display your AIM screenname to the recipient. Since both you and the recipient can send messages back and forth, the text conversation works similar to an instant messaging chat.

Step 1

Open Trillian. If you haven’t already added an AIM account, click the "Trillian" menu button and select "Manage Accounts." Click the "Add a New Account" button and click "AOL Instant Messenger" on the submenu. Type your AIM account credentials in the displayed fields and click "Connect."

Step 2

Click the "Trillian" menu button and click "Add Contact." Click the "Account" drop-down menu and select your AIM screenname. For the "Username" field, type "+" followed by the full phone number of the person you want to text. Do not use any spaces after the "plus sign" or between any parts of the number itself. Click "Add" to add the phone number to your AIM contacts list.

Step 3

Double-click the phone number in the Trillian contacts list. Type your text message in the box in the lower part of the chat window and then press "Enter." When your contact receives the text, he can reply to the SMS to send further responses, and any replies will appear in your chat window. Type a message and press "Enter" to send additional text messages to the recipient.

Tips

  • AIM’s SMS service only allows you to send text, so you can’t attach images or videos to messages.
  • If you ever need to block a phone number from texting you on Trillian, click the "Block" button above the conversation.

Warning

  • Although sending and receiving text messages through Trillian doesn’t cost you anything, your contact is responsible for any fees incurred while sending or receiving messages from you.
